Boni Libri

One of the distinctives of the Academy is that we believe that the development of reading skills, the enjoyment of good books and of quality writing are the first steps to fostering a love of learning. We have therefore, adopted a reading program called Boni Libri (“Good Books”).

Through this required program students will develop a love and appreciation of the great books, that which we call classics. A classic is a work of literature, which has been read and enjoyed by a least three generations. Exceptions may be made for children’s books of acclaim, such as Newberry/Caldecott award winners. Reading should be one of the most wonderful and enjoyable occupations in life. It is our job, as parents, to see that our children acquire not only the ability to read well but also acquire a taste for what is good and beautiful in literature.

Each student is required to read a minimum of one book (from the CCA Reading List and additional Reading List) in each  Boni Libri reading period and submit a brief book card. This 4 X 6 index card will include the name of the author, the title of the book and a brief synopsis of the book. Cards are submitted to the homeroom teacher on or before the due date.

Failure to complete a card on time will result in an automatic drop of one full letter grade in literature for the quarter. The teacher will collect all cards, record the date that they were handed in, and file them appropriately. The Boni Libri reading card due dates are posted on the school’s webpage at www.ChristClassical.com with reminders in the E-mail updates and Classroom newsletters. It is the children's and parent’s responsibility to ensure that they and their student are familiar with each of the submission dates in their classroom.
